Dangal is based on the life of Indian amateur wrestler and senior Olympics coach Mahavir Singh Phogat, whose daughter Geeta Phogat, won India’s first gold medal in women’s wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, under her father’s training.
Aamir portrays different phases of Phogat’s life in the movie. The first phase of the shooting that saw Aamir in the role of elderly Phogat completed two months back and the actor, since then, has been doing intense exercise to rebound as a young wrestler to play Phogat’s early days as an amateur wrestler.
