Police divers on Wednesday recovered the body of a 2-year-old boy who was pulled by an alligator into a lagoon near a Walt Disney World hotel in Orlando, Florida.
The body of Lane Graves was found from near where he vanished and was completely intact.
Orange County Sheriff Jerry Demings said that the body was found 6 feet of murky water perhaps 10 to 15 yards from where the boy was attacked.
He was likely drowned, Demings said.
“Of course, the autopsy has to confirm that, but there is likely no question in my mind that the child was drowned by the alligator,” he added.
Alligators are common in Florida ponds, lakes, canals and lagoons. Five alligators were taken from the lagoon after the boy went under. The search for alligators is on progress.
The artificial lake covers about 200 acres, is 14 feet deep in parts and feeds a series of canals that wind through the Disney Complex. It lies across from the Magic Kingdom theme park.
Sheriff Demings noted that Disney had been in business in the area for 45 years and had never had a similar incident, and that no “nuisance alligators” had been reported in the area recently.
The boy’s family was at a movie night at the Grand Floridian resort around 9 p.m. The boy walked into about a foot of water in a lagoon and his parents and sister were all nearby. But making the efforts of the witnesses and parents to save the boy in vain, an alligator sprang from the water and clamped its jaws around the boy.
His Parents, Matt and Melissa Graves , who are from Elkhomrn, Nebrasaka was also jumped in to the lake but the child was dragged underwater in the Seven Seas Lagoon.
A report about the attack was first received to the Reedy Creek emergency services call center at 9.16 p.m.
A search began immediately by the Resort authorities along with the police divers.
The first reported deadly alligator attack since 2007 in Central Florida was reported last year. James Okkerse, a 61-year-old swimmer was attacked by a 12-foot gator and was pulled from a lake in Volusia County, north of Orlando.
Matthew Riggis,a 22-year-old man was also killed by an alligator in Brevard County, east of Orlando.
