Kerala police on Thursday arrested the prime suspect in the brutal murder of a 30-year old Dalit woman at Perumbavoor, Kochi, in the state of Kerala. 23-year-old Ami ul-Islam, a native of Assam was arrested from Kancheepuram in Tamil Nadu and is in police custody for further interrogation.
Kerala Chief Minister PInarayi Vijayan confirmed the arrest and said that the police have got all information regarding the suspect.
“Investigation team has received full information about the accused. From yesterday onwards, the accused was under police radar,” Pinarayi Vijayan told Media.
The police have formed a special investigation team headed by ADGP B Sandhya to investigate the gruesome rape and murder of Jisha, a Dalit law student.
According to reports, the accused has confessed to the murder and the DNA test conducted by the police has also confirmed that Islam is the murderer of Jisha. The police have taken him to Aluva police club Thursday evening.
The police are suspecting that prior enmity of Islam led to the murder. He had an argument with Jisha earlier when he tried to enter a place where only women take bath. One of Jisha’s acquaintances had slapped Islam and Jisha had made fun of him when the incident happened. After the incident, Islam developed an enmity for Jisha, reported Manoramaonline.
The accused had tried to rape the woman and attacked her causing serious injuries to her genitals. When she asked for water, he gave her alcohol.
After committing the murder, he went to Assam and destroyed his SIM card. After a few days, he went to Kancheepuram and started working there.
The footwear left behind by the accused at the crime spot led the investigation team to Islam. DNA samples of the suspect were collected from the footwear. The owner of the shop from where he purchased had identified the suspect.
“He won’t be produced before media as an identification parade is due. Preparation of remand report, evidence gathering, medical examination and other formalities will follow,” ADGP B Sandhya was quoted as saying by Manoramaonline.
The incident happened on April 28 had led to widespread outrage across the state. The first team that probed the case had been criticized for its indifference in investigating the case.
The Left Democratic Front (LDF) government changed the team when they assumed power on May 25.
