A 20-year-old British man arrested for trying to disarm a police officer at a Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas in a bid to kill the presumptive Republican President nominee.
According to a statement from Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, Michael Sandford attempted to grab a police officer’s gun from its holster inside a Las Vegas theatre where Trump was holding a campaign rally on June 18.
“Sandford began a conversation with the officer under the pretense that he was seeking an autograph. During the conversation, Sandford attempted to disarm the officer,” the statement said.
A complaint filed in federal court in Nevada says that the young man told a Secret Service agent after his arrest that he had driven from California to Las Vegas “to kill Trump,” and had been to a range a day earlier to learn to shoot as he had never fired a gun before.
It added that Sandford to investigators he had purchased tickets for a rally in Phoenix, where he “would try again to kill Trump” in the event if his plan in Las Vegas failed.
Sandford charged with attempting to commit an act of violence on restricted grounds and had his initial court appearance, where he was remanded to custody. A preliminary hearing is set for Tuesday, July 5,2016.
This arrest comes amid one of the nastiest US presidential campaigns in recent history, dominated by vilolent rhetoric, with Trump lashing out at Mexicans, Muslims and other groups.
The incident is now being investigated by the U.S. Secret Service.
