S Chand Group, one of the leading players in India’s educational publication market, has launched an initiative to build libraries in about 700 schools under the government.
Renowned athlete Milkha Singh launched the initiative named Read India that will benefit more than 3.5 lakh unprivileged students in government schools across the nation, reported IANS.
Students of government-run schools in India, especially in rural areas, usually do not have access to books due to lack of funds and mismanagement in the education sector. Read India initiative, which is also supported by the Delhi chapter of Round Table India, aims to fill the gap.
To ensure students from kindergarten to eighth standard get free access to quality books, S Chand will provide 400 books to the libraries initially. It includes books from various subjects such as mathematics, general knowledge, and general studies.
Inaugurating the initiative in a school in north Delhi’s Bhalaswa village, Singh said that the move will “ignite their minds” of the unprivileged students across the nation.
“The company is committed to improving the lives of millions of underprivileged children by giving them quality education and developing better reading and learning habits thereby accelerating the growth in the education sector,” Himanshu Gupta, managing director of S. Chand Group told IANS.
The project cost is estimated to be around four crore Rupees.
