The Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia marked the political debut of Indian American Neera Tanden on a national stage.
Addressing the gathering, Tanden said, “I know firsthand that the decisions our leaders make, make all of the difference in peoples’ lives. That’s why I chose a career in public policy, and that’s why I am so very proud to support Hillary Clinton.”
A long-time supporter of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton, Tanden is the president of Centre for American Progress, a Washington-based progressive public policy research, and advocacy organization.
Neera Tanden was the only Indian American to have invited to speak at the convention.
“I am so proud to have addressed the #DemsInPhilly because I’m only where I am because of the policies of the Dem party,” Tanden tweeted after delivering the speech at the convention on Wednesday.
Born in 1970 in Bedford, Massachusetts to immigrant parents from India, Neera Tanden, 45, is expected to hold a prominent role in the administration if Clinton wins the election.
Tanden has played a crucial role in shaping some of the key policies of the Democratic campaign and Obama administration. Being one of the strong campaigners of Clinton, she has been aggressive on Twitter to defend the Democratic nominee.
Taking on Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, Tanden told reporters on Wednesday, “He has been very antagonistic towards all immigrants. He does not have a very clear picture of who an American is. And I do not think that is really welcoming among the South Asian community.”
A graduate from Yale Law School, Tanden was the domestic policy director for Barack Obama’s campaign.
