Police nab some Bajran Dal, VHP workers.
A group of protestors attacked the car of the Congress leader and actress Ramya, who is facing sedition charges for her comments about Pakistan, in Mangaluru on Thursday, while she was returning from Mangalore airport.
The protestors pelted stones and eggs at her car and shouted slogans demanding an apology from the actress-turned-politician.
According to a report in News 18, the protestors are Bajrang Dal and VHP workers who were detained by the police.
“I landed in Mangalore. There was a tight security. Some people pelted eggs at my car. I don’t know who they are. The people will try all sorts of things. It is not going to affect me. I am not going to backtrack. I am not at all worried,†Ramya told News 18.
K Vittal Gowda, a Karnataka advocate, had filed a complaint of sedition against Ramya after she praised the hospitality of Pakistan. She had recently visited Pakistan to attend the SAARC meeting of young parliamentarians.
On her return, Ramya negated the remark of Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar about Pakistan. “Pakistan is a good country, not hell. Parrikar’s comments (that going to Pakistan or hell is the same thing) are not true,†she said.
The BJP and ABVP activists had staged protests against her remark seeking an apology. But, she refused to apologize saying that her comment did not amount to sedition.
BJP leader S Prakash said that the attack was in connection with her comments against Mangaluru people and it had nothing to do with her Pakistan comment.
“Ramya is after free publicity. She had called Mangalore hell and Pakistan a good country,†he said.
“These days being called anti-national is a compliment. But, I would like to clarify that I am not an anti-national,” said Ramya, who represented Mandya Lok Sabha constituency from 2013 to 2014.
The Judicial Magistrate First Class court in Somwarpet will hear the case on August 27.
