Police are yet to apprehend the man who set a Muslim woman in traditional attire afire on Fifth Avenue, with a cigarette lighter.
The New York Police Department released surveillance video Tuesday showing the suspect who they believe set fire to the 35-year-old Scottish tourist, reported the New York Daily News.
The victim was window-shopping outside a pricey Fifth Ave. boutique Saturday around 9 p.m. when she noticed the sleeve of her blouse was smoldering, police said.
As the stunned woman patted out the flames, she saw the suspect standing next to her with a lighter in his hand, police said. The sicko then casually sauntered off down E. 54th St, reported the News.
The video shows the suspect — whose race is unclear — wearing a backward baseball cap, a black tank top, black pants and black and white shoes and swinging his arms as he walks along a sidewalk with a group of people.
The NYPD Hate Crime Task Force is investigating to see if the firebrand was motivated by bias toward Muslims.
NBC News reported the victim was able to quickly put out the flames and wasn’t hurt. She declined to speak publicly but told NBC 4 New York she was doing OK and that her only focus and concern is that her attacker is caught and prosecuted.
The Council on American-Islamic Relations condemned the attack, saying it was “the latest in a series of attacks on Muslims in that state and nationwide in recent days and months.” It’s offering $1,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspect.
Last week, two Muslim women pushing their toddlers in strollers in Brooklyn were attacked by a woman who screamed “get the f— out of America b—–s, you don’t belong here,” according to authorities. The suspect punched one of the women in the head and tried to rip her hijab off.
