An Indian American community organization, Indiaspora, will organize an inaugural ball for the 45th President of the United States, which could be either Hillary Clinton or Donald Trump, on January 18, 2017, in Washington, DC.
The second presidential ball being organized by Indiaspora, which would be attended by top Indian American personalities, US lawmakers and possibly the new president too, would signify the emergence of the community, according to the event organizers.
“This would be a bipartisan event to celebrate the success and significance of the Indian American community and to welcome in the new administration,” Indian American investor and philanthropist M R Rangaswami said, reported the Press Trust of India.
The inaugural presidential ball was held in January 2013. Next year’s ball would, among other things, showcase Indian-origin influences in the US, like yoga, Bollywood and chicken tikka masala.
Rangaswami hoped that the general elections would also result in greater representation of the Indian Americans in the US Congress.
California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris has a good chance of becoming the first Indian-American to be elected as a US Senator.
Also, apart from incumbent congressman Ami Bera, from California, some other Indian American politicians of being elected to the US House of Representatives, including Raja Krishnamurthy from Illinois, Pramila Jayapal from Washington State and Ro Khanna from California.
“We hope that after January, Indian-Americans could comprise of one per cent of the members in the Congress,” Rangaswami said.
