One of the most successful genres of Bollywood movies of late has been biopics. In recent years, there has been a slew of biopics and their numbers are growing each year as it has turned out to be a very successful genre of the commercial movie industry.

MS Dhoni – The Untold Story: The latest biopic to release in the Bollywood industry is MS Dhoni – The Untold Story, directed by Neeraj Pandey. The movie starring Sushant Singh that was released on September 30 and has already earned US$22.2 million, the highest ever revenue generated by a biopic till date. The movie is about the life of Indian cricket captain Mahindra Singh Dhoni.
Neerja: Neerja was the biopic of, a flight attendant, who sacrificed her life helping passengers escape from armed hijackers who took control of the flight Pan Am flight 73 in 1986. The movie had Sonam Kapoor playing the role of the flight attended Neerja. The movie was a success earning $29 million at the box office and the movie gave Sonam a much-needed life to her career.
Sarabjit: The movie is the story of Sarabjit Singh who was convicted by a Pakistani court for cross-border spying and terrorism. His family, especially his sister took the issue to the notice of government but political relations between India and Pakistan took a long time to prove Sarabjit’s innocence. This film directed by Omung Kumar (of Mary Kom fame) stars Randeep Hooda as Sarabjit and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan playing his sister, Dalbir.
Azhar: Azhar, which saw Emraan Hashmi playing the role of controversial former Indian cricket captain Mohammad Azharuddin failed to impress the audience. The film tells the story of one of the most successful Indian cricket captains who was banned for alleged match fixing.
Aligarh: Aligarh is a movie based on the true story of Dr. Shrinivas Ramchandra Siras a professor at the Aligarh Muslim University who was sacked on charges of homosexuality. The movie was released in early 2016 and had stars Manoj Bajpai and Rajkummar Rao in key roles.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag: One of the best biopics ever made in Bollywood, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is the story of Milkha Singh, also known as the Flying Sikh of India. It is an inspiring tale of hard work and belief that glorifies the life of the legendary athlete. Actor Farhan Akhtar absolutely nailed the role.
Mary Kom: Released in 2014, the film depicts boxing legend Mary Kom’s journey of becoming a boxer to her victory at the 2008 World Boxing Championships in Ningbo. The film stars Priyanka Chopra in the lead role of the eponymous boxer, with Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa in supporting roles as her husband and mentor, respectively.
The Dirty Picture: Inspired by the South Indian actress Silk Smitha, this is one of the boldest biopics ever made in Bollywood. Actress Vidya Balan took up the role of Silk Smitha and delivered an overpowering performance. The film won many accolades from critics who appreciated this bold move.
Mangal Pandey: Mangal Pandey the 1857 Indian Mutiny highlighted the events that unfolded in the fight for independence. Actor Aamir Khan delivered a stellar performance in his role as Mangal Pandey. The film didn’t fare well at the box-office but received critical acclaim.
Bandit Queen: It is a biopic on Phoolan Devi, a rebel who rose to become a politician. The film depicted the brutalities faced by her that forced her to become a dacoit. The role of Bandit Queen was given to Seema Biswas, who acted superbly.
