Lou Majaw to celebrate in style on Oct. 16th.
As the world is praising legendary American singer Bob Dylan for winning the Nobel Prize for Literature, an Indian musician is all set to celebrate Dylan’s victory,
Lou Majaw, 69, from Shillong, Meghalaya, is going all out to celebrate Dylan’s achievement. An ardent follower of Dylan, Majaw is called Dylon of Shillong.
“This is the greatest news on earth, man. And it calls for a celebration,†said Majaw, reported The Hindustan Times.
“I am overjoyed. This is a great thing for the people of Shillong though; sometimes I wonder why it took so long for Dylan to receive the award, it should have been 20-30 years ago. But nevertheless, better late than never, what do you say?†Majaw added.
Majaw has been celebrating Dylan’s birthday in Shillong in his own way every year since 1972. He has arranged an event at Cafe Shillong, Laitumkhrah on October 16 at 6 pm to celebrate Dylan’s Nobel Literature Prize.
“I hereby, invite all the music lovers and fans of Dylan to be part of this celebration at Cafe’ Shillong on October 16,†he said.
“Bob Dylan’s writings are so powerful right from the late fifties and especially during the 60’s and 70’s. He has given so much to the world through his writings and if the world leaders give five to ten minutes to Dylan’s songs. I am sure this world, irrespective of religion and color of the skin would understand peace,” Majaw told IANS.
Born to a poor family, the Majaws could not afford a guitar or a radio. In a friend’s house, he was introduced to the music of Bill Haley and Elvis Presley and taught himself the guitar as most boys and girls did in those days.
Lou was introduced to Bob Dylan’s work. Inspired by his music, he later organized a “Dylan’s birthday concert” in Shillong on 24 May 1972. Since then he has organized the concert each year on 24 May to pay obeisance to Dylan, with the shows generating national and international interest.
Apart from Majaw, Shillong has one more icon that shows it’s devout to the Nobel laureate. The city in North-East India has a café named after Bob Dylan, called ‘Dylan’s Café’ at Fruit Garden, Dhankheti.
“Dylan’s timeless poetic expression applauded and how! Congratulations Sir on winning the Nobel Prize in Literature. All of us here in Shillong are so proud! Ecstatic that our hero has won the Nobel Prize in Literature for his incredible, timeless poetry. Take a bow Sir! Love from Dylan’s Café Shillong!†Dylan’s Café organizers wrote on their Facebook page.
