Verma enjoyed his visit to India’s north-eastern state.
China on Monday criticized the US ambassador to India Richard Verma for his visit to Arunachal Pradesh.
China warned that interference of the US in what they call a disputed area would further complicate the dispute between India and China, reported NDTV.
According to China, more than 90,000 sq km (35,000 sq miles) of territory in the eastern Himalayas belong to them, a claim that India has rejected. Much of this disputed territory belongs to the Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh.
Firmly opposing the US ambassador’s visit, China’s foreign ministry spokesman Lu Kang said, “damage the hard-earned peace and tranquility of the China-India border region”, Reuters reported.
“Any responsible third party should respect efforts by China and India to seek peaceful and stable reconciliation and not the opposite,” Lu said, adding that “China’s position on eastern section is clear and consistent.”
China’s response came after Verma posted some photos on his Twitter account on October 21 after his visit to Arunachal Pradesh which China calls South Tibet.
“Thank you, Chief Minister Khandu for your warm hospitality in#Tawang. What a magical place,†Verma tweeted.
“Stunning mountains & wonderful people. Terrific visit to#ArunachalPradesh for the #TawangFestival. Thank you Tawang for the hospitality,†he said in another tweet.
China once again cleared its stand on the dispute that both the countries should go ahead with negotiations and consultations.
“China and India are wise and capable enough to deal with their own issue and safeguard the fundamental and long-term interests of the two peoples. The intervention of any third party will only complicate the issue and is highly irresponsible,†said Chinese foreign ministry.
Rejecting the claims of China, Craig L Hall, US Consul General in Kolkata had earlier said that the US considers Arunachal Pradesh an integral part of India.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs has not commented on China’s statement.
