The 33-year-old lawyer is practicing in Supreme Court of India.
Indian lawyer Aniruddha Rajput on Thursday was elected as a member of United Nation’s International Law Commission after a fierce contest.
The commission, which is the world’s top body of legal experts, is assigned to make progressive development of international law and its codification. The newly elected 34 layers will serve a term of five-year in the United Nations Office at Geneva beginning from January 2017.
The members have been elected from five geographical grouping – Asia-Pacific, Eastern European, Latin American and Caribbean and Western European states, respectively.
The election was held by way of a secret ballot and Dr. Rajput, who got 160 votes, topped the Asia Pacific group in voting.
The 33-year-old lawyer who is practicing in Supreme Court of India is the first Indian nominee to be chosen from outside a close circle of lawyers of the Ministry of External Affairs.
Dr. Rajput is an alumnus of London School of Economics and Political Science. He served as a member of an expert group appointed by the Law Commission of India to study and comment upon the Model Bilateral Investment Treaty 2015 of India.

“We are deeply appreciative of support extended by many, many friends of India to ensure Dr. Rajput’s election by a huge margin,” PTI quoted Indian’s Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin.
Shinya Murase of Japan got the second highest number of votes in the Asia-Pacific group at 148, followed by Jordan’s Mahmoud Daifallah Hmoud and China’s Huikang Huang with 146 votes each, Ki Gab Park of Korea with 136 votes, Ali bin Fetais Al-Marri of Qatar with 128 votes and Hong Thao Nguyen of Vietnam with 120 votes.
