‘The Downfall’ surfaces in a new avatar.
Social media has been flooded with trolls mocking the decision of India government to demonetize high denomination currencies ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the decision on November 8. While most of the mockery was based on real life situations and movies, some showed their video editing skills to make humor based on the state of affairs in the country.
A video uploaded on YouTube has used a clip from the 2004 German movie ‘The Downfall’ featuring Adolf Hitler which has been used by many to show their response to important developments taking place across the world.
In the video uploaded by a user going by the name ‘Arkady Gaider,’ Hitler fiercely responds to demonetization that has affected his day-to-day affairs. Though he is not disturbed by the announcement of demonetization, the information that only Rupees 2000 can be exchanged makes him lose his control as he curses Modi for being responsible for the situation.
“I always knew this guy Modi was an idiot,” says Hitler. “Now I don’t have any money to buy groceries for the Reich or to buy poison gas for the camps. He is an embarrassment for all of us.”
He is concerned about Modi as “he is giving international fascism a bad name.”
While one of the top-level army officers standing by him asks him about the soldiers guarding the boundaries, saying, “Mein Fuhrer, what about the soldiers who stand guard at the border…” – an argument always used by the right wing to validate the inconvenience caused by government decisions – Hitler replies: “Don’t feed me the same propaganda that I invented in the first place.”
The Fuhrer, who cannot contain his anger, goes on hitting out at Modi saying all the election promises made by him went in vain.
Finally, he realizes that there is no choice other than to follow the “stupid rules,” but his suggestion to survive the crisis is a classy one.
“All of you must buy smartphones and download the Paytm app and start shopping from Big Basket, Spencers, Reliance.” Desperate Hitler finally decides to go with the flow as he says “get me a Jio sim card.”
