Elsokary was touted as a hero after she ran into a burning building to save an elderly man and baby girl in 2014.
An off-duty hijab-clad NYPD officer, hailed by the mayor as a hero, and her teenage son became the city’s latest hate crime victims on Saturday when a bigot in Brooklyn yelled at them to “go back to your country”, according to the police report.
Officer Aml Elsokary dropped her 16-year-old son at the corner of Ridge Boulevard and 67th Street and then parked her car a little before 6pm on Saturday.
After parking her car, she had returned to the scene to find her son being pushed by the suspect, a white man in his 30s.
When the officer, a native New Yorker intervened, the man called her an “ISIS b****” before threatening her life, police officials claim.
“I will cut your throat. Go back to your country,” the man allegedly screamed at Elsokary – one of few Muslim officers who wears a hijab on duty, according to the department’s Muslim Officers Society.
Elsokary did not identify herself as a police officer, and was unarmed.
The suspect soon fled the scene and later arrested from his Ridge Boulevard apartment on Sunday and charged him with menacing hate crime and aggravated harassment.
“While the current political climate seems to have given false permission to unveil racist and vile comments, be it known that this great City, the melting pot of the world, will not fall victims to this disgusting behaviour,” Brooklyn Paper quoted Councilman Vincent Gentile.
Elsokary was touted as a hero by the New York city mayor after she ran into a burning building to save an elderly man and baby girl in April 2014.
Responding to a call about a fire over the police radio, Elsokary and her partner had rushed to a smoke-filled building.
The mother-of-five had received a medal for her bravery.
Elsokary joined the police deparment shortly after 9-11, and her Muslim faith was a major motivator, according to Mayor DeBlasio.
This disturbing incident is the latest in a series of hate crimes across the country against hijab-clad women Donald Trump’s win.
