Young Republican Club has filed a complaint against the professor.
When the United States elected Hillary Clinton as the popular candidate in the presidential election but gave Donald Trump a thumbs-up to take control of the White House, it was clear the country was divided.
Now, an incident in Orange Coast College where a professor spoke critically about president-elect Donald Trump only to elicit criticism from a few students in the class who happened to be Trump supporters is the latest example of how anti-Trump and pro-Trump discourses are affecting American life.
A student who recorded the video of the professor ranting about Trump in the class posted it on Facebook and itbecame viral causing an online outrage against the teacher, who now faces expulsion and legal threats.
According to reports, Professor Olga Perez-Stable Cox in the middle of her class on Human Sexuality took a detour and spoke about Trump winning the election as “an act of terrorism.”
She also said in the class that “Our nation is divided. We have been assaulted. It is an act of terrorism.”
She added, “One of the most frightening things for me, and most people in my life, is that the people who are committing the assault are among us.”
The professor was also critical about the cabinet picks of Trump, including his picks of advisers and mainly his vice-president, who according to the professor is a pro anti-gay activist.
She said “A white supremacist and a vice president that is one of the most anti-gay humans in this country,” she said.
Josh Recalde-Martinez, a member of the school’s Young Republicans Club said: “At this point, it’s not even education anymore, its indoctrination.”
The Young Republican Club has filed a complaint against the professor and there has been a huge outcry against the professor on the RateMyTeacher.com, that ranks professors.
One student wrote on the wall of RateMyTeacher.com “I felt censored and bullied if I did not agree with her opinions.”
“We are way beyond Republicans and Democrats, and we’re really back to being in a civil war,” the professor said, “and I don’t mean it in a fighting way, but our nation is divided as clearly as it was in civil war times.”
The video post of Recalde-Martinez on his Facebook page has been viewed by 18,000 and has hundreds of comments.
In response to the video post, the professor’s union warned the student who posted the video of legal action for illegally shooting the video without the prior permission of the teacher.
“This is an illegal recording without the permission of the instructor. The student will be identified and may be facing legal action,” read a post by the professor’s union.
Recalde-Martinez, in response to the warning, said “They wanted it to be known so that maybe we would get scared and take down the video. But to the union, I want to say we are not gonna be doing that.”
“The unions are acting like thugs, like bullies themselves,” said attorney Shawn Steel to cbslocal.com.
He also said “Every student knows it. If you stand up to your professor, 90 percent of the time the professor’s going to punish you,” said Steel.
