77 counties had a median income within the highest range.
A new report released by the US Census Bureau has found that the four richest counties in the United States are all situated in the Washington DC suburbs.
The census bureau came to the conclusion after evaluating the average household income of all counties in the US.
According to the report, Loudoun County, Va., where the median is the richest county in the US with an average household income of $125,900 in 2015, followed by Falls Church City, Va., where it the household income is an estimated $122,092; Fairfax County, Va., came third with $112,844; and Howard County, Md. secured the fourth position with $110,224 household income.
The bureau said it has treated cities such as Falls Church, VA equivalent to a county while calculating the average income.
Going by the report, out of the top 20 richest counties in the US, 9 are in the suburbs of a city that serves as the seat of a federal government that in fiscal 2016 taxed away $3,266,774,000,000 from the American people, spent $3,854,100,000,000, and ran a $587,326,000,000 deficit.
Interestingly, six counties in the top 20 list are in the state of Northern Virginia making the biggest contributor followed by Maryland, California, and New Jersey with three counties, respectively. New York, New Mexico, Colorado, Tennessee, and Georgia have one county each featured in the list of top 20 counties with highest household income.
Maryland’s three counties are all suburbs of Washington, D.C. —Howard, Calvert, and Montgomery.
The three counties of New Jersey to feature in the list are Hunterdon, Morris, and Somerset County. All these counties are located in the suburbs and outer suburbs of New York City.
California’s Silicon Valley has two counties with high household income – Santa Clara and San Mateo. Adding to this Marin County, located to the north of San Francisco is also on the list released by the Census Bureau, making it a total three counties from California.
The report titled Small Area Income and Poverty Estimates: 2015 was released by the Census Bureau yesterday and has the data from 3,141 counties in the US.
The report found that median household income at the county level ranged from $22,894 to $125,900 with a median county-level value of $46,800.
It also says that 77 counties had a median income within the highest range ($81,129 to $125,900) while 42 of high-income counties were located in the Northeast region, Maryland, and Virginia.
The report also says that 74% of US counties registered an increase in median household income out of which 14% had a statistically significant increase.
20 rich counties
