Singh had shot dead Abzal Khan in 1999.
Indian American Balkumar Singh, 38, who featured in a 2009 episode of ‘America’s Most Wanted’ before he was arrested last year after 16 years on the run after committing murder at a wedding in New York, has been sentenced to 19 years to life in prison.
Singh was sentenced Monday in Nassau County Court. He pleaded guilty last month to murder in the 1999 fatal shooting of 19-year-old Abzal Khan, reported AP.
Newsday reported Singh, handcuffed and wearing an orange jailhouse jumpsuit, said nothing before the sentence was imposed by Judge Christopher Quinn in Nassau County Court in Mineola.
Authorities say Singh shot Khan seven times following a dance floor dispute at a wedding hall in Hicksville, Long Island; scores of guests witnessed Khan’s death.
A New York Times article at the time of the shooting said police believed the gunman had asked a girl to dance and argued with her date. Later, the gunman was waiting outside, and as the wedding guests left the party, he opened fire.
Singh, who had several aliases, traveled to Canada and Guyana before an international manhunt ended in Trinidad in March 2015 with his capture by law enforcement.
After he was arrested last year and brought to New York, Singh apologized as he was led into a Long Island courthouse, reported New York Daily News.
“I’m sorry for the pain I caused the family,” Singh told reporters before his arraignment in Nassau County court.
Singh had then pleaded not guilty to murder, assault, weapons and other charges and was ordered held without bail.
Court documents indicate the assault charges involve the wounding of a second man. He was shot in the leg.
