One dead and many injured.
A new bill that was passed in the legislative assembly on Monday, legalizing Jallikattu across Tamil Nadu has put an end to the weeklong protest that had its epicenter in Marina Beach, Chennai.
The protest that continued till Monday evening had affected the normal life of people. The police action to disperse the crowd had injured more than 60 people, including 33 police personals, who are currently admitted to government hospital.
There are also reports that one person who was admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital (RGGG), Chennai with severe head injury is being monitored.
The RGGG opened a special ward to treat the injured police officers whose number is estimated to be more than 31.
The Deal of RGGG also said that more than 50 people had been admitted to the hospital.
Eleven people were admitted to Government Royapettah Hospital while 21 others were treated as outpatients. “Two policemen, a constable, and sub-inspector have suffered head injury,” said a senior doctor.
The police brutally beat up a 108-ambulance drive after mistaking him for one of the protestors. “He has severe injuries on his back. He is under observation,” the doctor said.
Earlier during the day, Tamil superstar Rajinikanth had appealed to the protesters to call off the agitation immediately.
In a tweet that appeared in his official twitter handle, Rajinikanth requested the agitators to conclude it as anti-social elements are trying to capitalize
“Reposing faith on the Union and state governments and legislature after they assured to evolve a permanent solution to jallikattu issue and maintaining peace until the timeframe set by them is the respectable act on your part,” he appealed to the protesters.
Earlier during the day, one of the protests died, resulting in protestors setting a police station near Marina beach on fire, signaling the wrong turn of the agitation.
