The accused, Sonu Gupta, has been booked for attempt to commit culpable homicide.
In a shocking incident, a 26-year-old woman threw her two-and-a-half-year-old son down the stairs during an argument with her in laws in south-east Delhi’s Pul Prahladpur earlier this week. The child survived the fall but suffered several injuries.
The accused, Sonu Gupta, has been booked for attempt to commit culpable homicide and is being questioned in connection with a complaint lodged by her husband Nitin Gupta.
Nitin Gupta, who owns a cosmetic shop in Pul Prahladpur, also submitted a CCTV footage showing Sonu throwing their child, Ashu, down the stairs. He said that Sonu had an argument with his parents during which she got agitated and started hurling abuses at them.
The CCTV footage shows the woman throwing the child in fit of rage following an argument with her father-in-law. Family members are seen rushing out to rescue Ashu as he cries for help. The woman’s in-laws alleged that she had hurt the child in past too and had made calls to police accusing them of torturing her and her child. Her father-in-law added that they were forced to install CCTV cameras in their residential premise to gather evidence.
Police said that the incident had been reported to them on January 24 around 6 pm and they suspect that the woman may be suffering from a mental disorder.
“The PCR call was received in Pul Prahladpur about a quarrel and it was alleged that a child was thrown from the staircase on the first floor of the house. The police reached the spot and took the complaint from Mr. Nitin Gupta who said his son Ashu Gupta was thrown by Ms. Sonu Gupta, 26, the mother of the child, on January 21 and they had a video recording of the footage,” The Hindu quoted a senior police officer.
The child was taken to a private hospital and later treated AIIMS for his injuries.
