Swaraj said it is not the first time that the US lawmakers have proposed such changes in the H-1B program.
India’s External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj said on Thursday that “there is no reason to worry about it [H1B] as of now.”
The minister was speaking in the Rajya Sabha and said that this is not the first time that the US lawmakers have proposed changes in the H-1b visas.
“Currently there are four bills in the US Congress about curbs on H1B visas. We are engaged (in a dialogue) with the US at very high level regarding this… We are making all efforts (through diplomatic channels) to ensure these bills are not passed,” Swaraj said in the Rajya Sabha, NDTV reported.
Swaraj said that the US authorities have provided a list of 271 illegal immigrants to the Indian government. She said that all these illegal immigrants might soon be sent back to India.
“We have asked for more details about these 271 persons. Once we check their antecedents and find they are actually Indian citizens, we’ll provide them travel documents back to India so that they are not put behind bars by US authorities,” she said.
