United States tops the list of countries with most Indian students

UK is in the six position with 16,715 Indian students.

The United States has the highest number of Indian students studying under international student category says the latest figure released by the Ministry of External Affairs on Indian students abroad.

According to MEA, the compilation of the figures is based on the inputs received by from the Indian Embassies in different countries.

The Ministry had opened an online portal for Indian students abroad to register themselves voluntarily by providing information about the courses enrolled, location, institution, the duration of course etc.

According to the figure, out of the 4.4 million Indian students studying in 75 countries, 1,65,918 students are studying in the US.

The MEA and Missions have been issuing advisories from time to time asking Indian students to carry all documentation and undertake due diligence to ensure that the foreign institutions to which they are seeking admission have proper authorization and capacities

According to the MEA website, “The Ministry and our Missions are in regular contact with foreign governments, universities and educational institutions, Indian Student Associations and community organizations and take all possible measures to provide assistance to Indian students in foreign countries, as and when required.”

The second country to host the highest number of Indian students is Australia with 66,886 students followed by Canada with 50,000 students. The list also has the UK in the six position with 16,715 Indian students.

The data was released by the MEA as an answer to a question raised in Lok Sabha by BJP MP Harish Dwivedi.
