A renowned ophthalmologist, Raju serves as a clinical professor of ophthalmology at the West Virginia University. He is the founder and medical director of the Eye Foundation of American (EFA).
Indian American physician Dr. Vadrevu Raju has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Science, Toledo, Ohio. Along with Raju, Galilee Medical Center and Donald C Mullen are also listed in the Hall of Fame.
Born in Andhra Pradesh, India, Raju graduated in medicine from the Andhra University in 1965. After completing his internship and residency in India, Raju served as a Casualty Officer at St. Helier Hospital, Carshalton, Surrey, UK, in 1968. At UK he also completed his ophthalmology residency and fellowship at the Royal Eye Group of Hospitals, London. Thereafter, he worked as faculty in West Virginia University’s ophthalmology department for about eight years. Since 1984 he serves as a Clinical Professor and has a thriving private practice.
Raju is also a founder and medical director of the Eye Foundation of America (EFA). Headquartered in West Virginia, the Foundation provides affordable eye care and treatment for children, especially in developing countries. EFA has already served in more than 14 countries and built eye hospitals in India. Under Raju’s directions, the Foundation has dedicated itself to the eradication of preventable blindness in children, worldwide. His Foundation’s traveling eye camps provide world-class eye care services and have treated nearly two million patients; and performed more than 300,000 eye surgeries in 21 countries, according to the University of Toledo website.
Raju has received several national and international awards and honor, as mentioned in his resume. He received the Mahatma Gandhi Pravasi Samman Award for Achievement in Medicine, House of Lords, London in 2014; AMA Foundation Nathan Davis Execellence in Medicine International Award in 2013; Top Ophthalmologist in the World International Association of Ophthalmologists 2014; and, Martin Luther King Jr Achievement Award, WVU in 2008, among other accolades.
