While the protests against the government of Iran are spreading, the US, on Tuesday, made clear that the nation stands with the people of Iran and urged the world to show their support to the people.
Nikki Haley, the US Ambassador to the UN, said that all freedom loving countries should stand with the people of Iran.
“This is the precise picture of a long-oppressed people rising up against their dictators. The international community has a role to play on this. The freedoms that are enshrined in the United Nations charter are under attack in Iran,” Haley said at UN, CNN reported.
“If the Iranian dictatorships history is any guide, we can expect more outrageous abuses in the days to come. The UN must speak out,” she said. “We must not be silent. The people are crying out for freedom. All freedom loving people must stand with their cause. The international community made the mistake of failing to do that in 2009. We must not make that mistake again.”
Iranian people started taking out protests against the country’s leadership following a sudden jump in food and gasoline price.
The demonstration started in the eastern Iranian city of Mashhad but gradually spread to other places and gathered momentum to become a nationwide agitation. According to media reports, more than 20 people have been killed and more than 450 protestors have been arrested since last Thursday.
Haley said the US is planning to hold emergency meetings with the Security Council in New York and the Human Rights Council in Geneva to discuss the situation in Iran.
Despite the allegation by the Iranian administration that countries including Britain, the US, and Saudi Arabia are instigating Iranian people against the government, the US wants the agitation to continue.
On Tuesday, Undersecretary of State Steve Goldstein revealed that the US wants the people of Iran to “continue to fight for what’s right and to open up Iran.”
According to the CNN report, the US officials have been communicating with protestors through their Farsi-language social media accounts that are accessible to Iranian people through VPN (virtual private networks) though there is a restriction to the use of some social media platforms.
Taking note of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un’s comments about his country’s nuclear capability, Haley said “the civilized world must remain united and vigilant against the rogue state’s development of a nuclear arsenal. We will never accept a nuclear North Korea.”
