Sudhakar was returning from a trip to the Grand Canyon with three other Indian weightlifters.
Indian weightlifter Col. Jayant Sudhakar, who was seriously hurt in car accident on Tuesday, passed away at a Las Vegas hospital on Friday.
The weightlifter, who was in the United States to compete in the Masters World Cup held in San Diego last week, was returning from a road trip to the Grand Canyon, when his vehicle had a head-on collision with another car on Tuesday.
Three other Indian weightlifters, Santokh Singh, Archana Jain and Rajiv Sharma, were also in the car.
Singh and Jain also suffered grave injuries in the accident, while Sharma managed to miraculously escape from the accident without any injuries.
Soon after the accident, Sudhakar, who was also the president of the Indian Masters Weightlifting Federation, was airlifted to a hospital in Las Vegas. He succumbed to his injuries on Friday around noon. He was 50 years old.
Singh and Jain are being treated at hospitals in Las Vegas.
The weightlifters were in the US to participate in the Masters World Cup, which was held in San Diego from October 3 to 7.
Sudhakar and Sharma had both won a gold medal in their respective categories at the Masters. Singh and Jain had won a silver each.
Sudhakar, who joined the international masters world in 2011, has won a number of gold medals. Just ahead of his win at the San Diego Masters World Cup, he had also won a gold at the Worlds Masters Weightlifting Championship in Montreal.
Sudhakar, a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, was a colonel in the Indian Army.
The Indian Consulate in San Francisco tweeted upon hearing the athlete’s death: “India mourns noted weightlifter Col Sudhakar Jayant, who passed away in a tragic car accident near the Grand Canyon shortly after winning the World Masters Gold in San Diego. Heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family.”

Hopefully, the CGI (Consulate General of India) shows empathy in this tragic moment by cooperating and making it easier for the people trying to get Col. Jayant Sudhakar’s body back home to his family. Cutting down some of the red tape is the least CGI can do for an Indian soldier who was obviously a winner in life.

What can be more tragic than this that a world class athlete had to lose his life this way- in a road accident? Just unbelievable & unbearable. We were in the same hostel in IIT Delhi.
My heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family. May his soul rest in peace.
Also, I wish speedy recovery to other two co-travelers who are recuperating from serious injuries.
