WASHINGTON, DC: University of Vermont student Lucy Edwards, originally from northern Virginia, was crowned Miss Vermont 2014, on April 26.
Edwards (19), was the winner of the 70th iteration of the pageant. Her new title as Miss Vermont means that she will compete later this year for the crown of Miss America, which is currently held by Nina Davuluri, the first woman of Indian origin to ever win the prestigious title.
According to the Miss Vermont official website, Edwards is a sophomore at the University of Vermont, and is pursuing a degree in neuroscience – another parallel to Davuluri, who graduated from the University of Michigan and hopes to become a physician one day.
Each contestant for Miss Vermont is required to represent a charitable organization. Edwards has chosen the B+ Foundation, which helps provide care and money for children fighting cancer. Edwards’ talent at the pageant was singing, and she gave a rendition of the song “I Am Changing” which floored the judges.
Edwards, of Indian origin, is originally from Round Hill, Virginia, a community in the northern Virginia county of Loudoun. Her Facebook page indicates that she is a graduate of Middleburg Academy, a small private school from which she graduated in 2012. She has also worked as a model for Abercrombie and Fitch since 2013.
This year’s Miss America pageant will be held in Atlantic City again, and will be the 88th such pageant. So far, Edwards is one of only two Miss America contestants who have been confirmed – New Hampshire will be sending Megan Cooley, another 19 year-old singer.
The Miss America pageant will take place on September 14.
