New machine makes rotis so you don’t have to.
By Deepak Chitnis
WASHINGTON, DC: A new machine could revolutionize the way Indians and South Asians eat at home, by providing fresh, hot rotis without all the work.
The Rotimatic, a counter-top machine that takes dough and water and puts out rotis in a matter of minutes, will become available in to customers in North American in March of next year. But the company’s manufacturer, Zimplistic, began taking pre-orders today, and those that get the jump on ordering their very own magic roti machine can get it for $599.
Does that seem expensive? Well, it isn’t, especially not when you consider that those who wait until next year to get their Rotimatics will be paying a premium price of $999 for them.
In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Pranoti Nagarkar and Rishi Israni – the co-founders of Zimplistic and whose brainchild the Rotimatic is – explain that their machine is not some simply bread-maker. It’s an all-in-one roti creator that saves people, especially women, hours of sweaty work by the stove.
For centuries, women in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and other South Asian nations have spent their time making naan, roti, and chhapatis while their husbands simply sit there and eat. Now – as demonstrated in a YouTube video Zimplistic put out months ago – women can do whatever they want with that time, as the Rotimatic does all the work for them in practically no time.
With an easy-to-clean system and a relatively small size, the Rotimatic could become the new craze to sweep the South Asian American diaspora. But one curious fact is that the machine isn’t available where it would probably be most popular: South Asia itself, particularly India.
Nargarkar and Israni won’t say when they plan to release it there, but for now, the US and Singapore are set to get their own Rotimatics next spring. With pre-orders, Zimplistic can gauge how much of a demand there is for the machine, and build more of them based on that.
Right now, pre-order prices are just $59, with package deals being offered if someone wants to buy up to 10 Rotimatics. The company estimates that the cost of the Rotimatic is offset by the $750 a family can save every year by using this machine, instead of buying ready-to-eat rotis at approximately 40 cents apiece.
To get your own Rotimatic, you can visit their site here. Below is a video of the Rotimatic at work, which has garnered over two million unique views since it went online last October:
