Dr. Raj Rao is based in Wisconsin.

WASHINGTON, DC: Dr. Raj Rao, professor of orthopaedic surgery and neurosurgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW), has been appointed chairperson of the Orthopaedic and Rehabilitation Devices Panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
Rao, who is a practicing orthopaedic surgeon at Froedtert Hospital and Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, will chair the FDA’s lead advisory panel that reviews the safety and efficacy of orthopaedic and spine-related devices for marketing in the U.S. Dr. Rao has served as a voting member on the panel since 2006, reported Wauwatosa Now.
Rao earned his medical degree at the University of Bombay in Bombay, India, in 1984. He completed further study in orthopaedics in India, Germany, and Canada, and then did a post-doctoral research fellowship at the University of Southern California (USC) in 1990. He completed his medical internship and residency at USC as well before completing a spine surgery fellowship at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, Mich., in 1996. He joined the MCW faculty in 1999.
Rao has earned numerous national and international honors in the field of spine surgery. He is currently a member of the Board of Directors of both, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Lumbar Spine Research Society, where he also chairs the Ethics Committee. He was recently awarded the 2014 David Selby Award of the North American Spine Society for contributions to the field of spinal disorders. He is also session moderator for the NIH’s Spine Study Group, and a moderator and abstract reviewer for the North American Spine Society.
