MUMBAI: Saif Ali Khan will play the main lead in the Bollywood remake of the Japanese crime thriller novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’, though it remains to be seen what character he ends up donning in the film.
Balaji Telefilms and the director Sujoy Ghosh acquired the rights of Keigo Higashino’s 2005 novel ‘The Devotion of Suspect X’.
The novel is the third in Higashino’s Detective Galileo series and is his most acclaimed work thus far, according to Wikipedia. The novel won him numerous awards, including the 134th Naoki Prize, which is a highly regarded award in Japan. The novel also won the 6th Honkaku Mystery Grand Prize, which is one of the most prestigious awards in the mystery novels category in Japan. 2006 Honkaku Mystery Best 10 and Kono Mystery ga Sugoi! 2006, annual mystery fiction guide books published in Japan, ranked the novel as the number one.
The English translation was nominated for the 2012 Edgar Award for Best Novel and the 2012 Barry Award for Best First Novel.
The book has already seen film adaptations in Japanese and Korean, while a Hollywood version is being developed by Kross Pictures, since 2011.
The film may see the return of Vidya Balan as the female protagonist.Other actors rumored to star in the film includes Naseeruddin Shah,Parambrata Chatterjee and Nawazuddin Siddiqui. With Saif ali Khan now playing the lead, two more lead actors need to be identified by Ghosh.
The plot has an abusive ex-husband killed by his ex-wife and daughter. The plot thickens when a neighbor of the two women offers his help, disposing not only of the body but plotting the cover-up step-by-step. The real drama begins when the body is discovered, and a police investigation begins, with a detective matching his wits with that of the neighbor.
