BANGALORE: Even as the row on data security is heating up, Xiaomi once again has put its controversial Redmi 1S smartphone for flash sale through Flipkart for the eighth time.
Last week, Indian Air Force authorities had warned personnel not to use Xiaomi smartphones, especially the Redmi 1S, which is the flagship smartphone of the manufacturer as they suspected data redirection to Chinese servers.
The eighth flash sale of the Redmi 1S for registered customers started on Tuesday. According to the official page of Redmi 1S, the Chinese manufacturer had stocked 60,000 units of the phone for today’s flash sale.

Surprisingly, the flash sale lasted for more than 10 minutes, which was not the case with other flash sales, which ended in seconds. The sudden decrease in the interest for Redmi 1S could be the reflection of the controversy surrounding Xiaomi phones.
For Xiaomi, it took just four years to surpass international brands such as Apple and Samsung to become the largest smartphone manufacturer in China. The official announcement about this came during the second quarter of this year.
Xiaomi became an instant hit in India after it first launched Xiaomi Mi3 smartphone in the market, partnering with online retailer Flipkart. The flash sale of Mi3 smartphone didn’t last long and the company said it won’t sell the device anymore as their focus will be on selling the Redmi 1S.
Xiaomi Redmi 1S offers a full HD 1280×720 display with 312 PPI and is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 quad-core processor, coupled with 1 GB Ram. The internal storage of 8 GB can be expanded up to 64 GB using a microSD card slot.
In addition to an 8 MP rear camera with flash and autofocus, the Redmi also features a 1.6 MP front camera. Redmi 1S also sports a 2000mAh removable battery.
Unlike the other Flipkart flash sale of Redmi, this time Xiaomi has not bundled the scratch resistant screenguard and the micro SIM card tray, which otherwise comes free along with the shipment.
On Monday, Xiaomi came with an official statement that the company is planning to set up a separate server in India for the growing number of its customers. This comes after the company’s Vice President came up with a post in Google Plus stating that the company is transferring data of customers outside China to a new server owned by Amazon.com.
Xiaomi came under the scanner as Indian and Taiwanese officials found frequent transfer of personal data of users to Chinese servers. The statement of the Vice President stirred up the debate more with government and national security agencies asking officials and their family not to use Xiaomi smartphones.
