PIKESVILLE, MD: More than 400 people received free medical consultation at a health fair held at the Masjid Gulzar E Madina on Sunday.
Hosted by the Raza e Mustafa Islamic Center, the medical camp was co-sponsored by a number of Indian and Asian American community organizations in the area. They include the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) Metropolitan Washington; the Philippines Nurses Association; the Chinese Culture and Community Center; the Muslim Community Clinic Inc.; Silver Spring; Capital Region Telugu Society; Kerala Cultural Society; and the Hindu Seva.
A number of physicians, nurses, and healthcare workers volunteered at the event. They offered consultation in a variety of fields including primary care, dentistry, endocrinology, gastroenterology, hematology-oncology, otolaryngology, orthopedics and rheumatology.
Among the sponsors were various several small and large businesses and nonprofits. For instance, Colgate sponsored a dental van that provided dental consultation for children from ages 1 to 12, while the Counselors Helping South Asians/Indians (Chai) offered mental and behavioral health information.
“The Metropolitan Washington Chapter of GOPIO is very pleased to be a part of this outstanding health fair, which was made possible by the collaboration of physicians, allied medical personnel, county and state health agencies, voluntary organizations dedicated volunteers, and Masjid management, ,” said Dr. Zafar Iqbal, president of the GOPIO DC Chapter., in a press release.
The health fair was coordinated by health care activist Mayur Mody.
