BENGALURU: The first flash sale of Xiaomi Mi4 in India ended with 25000 units getting sold out within 15 seconds after Flipkart opened the sales window at 2PM local time, on Tuesday.
Mi4 is the latest model introduced by the Chinese manufacturer in India, this after getting record response for some of the company’s earlier models that were sold via Flipkart through the same flash sale model.
Even though Mi4 is new in India, the company launched the model in China during the first quarter of 2014, garnering positive response from satisfied customers. Currently, the Chinese market is abuzz with talks about Xiaomi’s latest flagship models Mi Note and Note Pro, which are poised as iPhone 6 and 6 Plus killers.
Xiaomi is a fairly new company that started selling smartphones in China in 2010. Within the short span of five years, the company grew multi-fold and is currently labelled as the 3rd largest smartphone distributor in the world, apart from becoming the leader among the Chinese smartphone manufacturers.
Today’s flash sale featured the 16GB variant of Mi4 costing Rs. 19,999 ($322), but the company has revealed that it will be soon introducing the 64 GB version of Mi4 in India. The company said on Facebook the device will again have a sale on February 24, for Rs. 23,999 ($386).
There were apprehensions among buyers about the lack of an SD card slot in the 16 GB version of Mi4. By introducing the 64GB version, Xiaomi is providing an option to these buyers who demand higher storage.
Xiaomi Mi4 is 5-inch full HD smartphone powered with a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor coupled with 3GB RAM. The phone features a 13 MP camera like Mi3 with HD recording and an upgraded front camera with 8 MP for taking selfies and video conferencing.
The device is backed by a 3080 mAh battery that can last for more than a day. The Mi4 features a metal chassis with a removable back panel made out of plastic. The device is compact and lighter than Mi3, and runs on MIUI 6 on top of Android KitKat.
When comparing Mi4 with some of the new smartphones that entered Indian market recently, it seems like Xiaomi is a bit too late in introducing the device in India. One of the major pitfalls is the lack of 4G connectivity that has now become a standard even in budget smartphones after it was introduced in Redmi Note, Yu Yureka and Lenovo A6000.
Another let-down of the device, as we mentioned above, is the lack of expandable storage. Even as Xiaomi boast of having 4K recording capability in Mi4, it is unfortunate that users cannot record long duration videos as a 1 minute 4K video file uses more than 500MB of internal storage. We would recommend users to go with the 64GB variant of Mi4 to enjoy the full potential of the 4K recording.
