WASHINGTON, DC: It’s only been two months since “Parks and Recreation” wrapped up its much beloved, seven-season run, but co-creator Mike Schur and co-executive producer Alan Yang have already agreed to team up with one of the show’s breakout stars, Aziz Ansari, on a new comedy that will be exclusively carried by Netflix.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Ansari and Yang co-created the new series, which will feature a cast that includes Ansari, Jon Benjamin (“Archer” and “Bob’s Burgers”), Lena Waithe (“Dear White People”), Eric Wareheim (“Tim and Eric Awesome Show”) Noel Wells (“Saturday Night Live”) and Kelvin Yu (writer for “Bob’s Burgers”).
Slate noted Netflix has ordered an initial run of 10 episodes, and production is already under way in New York following a lengthy deal making process.
Reporter also established the plot details are being kept under wraps, but the series is rumored to be based loosely on Ansari’s life. It also noted the new comedy would be Michael Shur’s second ongoing venture, with “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” still pulling rave reviews over at Fox, as well as the second for Universal on Netflix following the success of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.”
The comedian has a long-standing partnership with Netflix. Ansari first teamed with the streaming service for “Buried Alive,” a stand-up comedy special that featured his tour across the world with stops at New York’s Carnegie Hall, London’s Hammersmith Apollo, and the Sydney Opera House. “Buried Alive” was a follow-up to his previous comedy specials, “Intimate Moments for a Sensual Evening” and “Dangerously Delirious.” Both specials, along with Ansari’s Netflix-exclusive Madison Square Garden feature, are available for streaming on the company’s website.
