WASHINGTON, DC: Indo-Canadian porn star turned Bollywood actress Sunny Leone has become the subject of a FIR in India that alleges she is guilty of posting vulgar content on web and social media.
Leone, whose real name is Karenjit Kaur Vohra, is being charged under sections 292, 292 A, 294 r/w 34 of the IPC besides Section 3 and 4 of the Indian Representation of Women and IT Act, reported Bollywood Mantra.
The case was registered by 30-year-old Dombivili, Mumbai resident Anjali Palan, who alleges Leone promotes obscenity and is detrimentally affecting Indian society. The Times of India revealed Palan lodged the FIR after she visited Leone’s website and found pornographic videos on it.
The Dombivili police have since transferred the case to the Cyber Crime division of Thane police for further investigation into the matter, disclosed Bollywood Mantra.
Leone, who recently celebrated her 34th birthday, was born in Sarnia, Ontario to Sikh Punjabi parents, according to Eye Weekly. Her father was born in Tibet and raised in Delhi, while her mother hailed from Sirmaur, Himachal Pradesh.
Before launching a career in Bollywood, Leone made a name for herself in the adult entertainment industry, getting her break posing for Penthouse in 2001 and segueing from the ensuing fame to pornographic films.
In 2008, Leone indicated to Steami Magazine that for the right price she would seriously consider a career in Bollywood, and she was subsequently courted by director Mohit Suri for his film “Kalyug.” However, Deepal Shaw was eventually cast in the role meant for Leone since Suri could not afford her $1 million fee.
Leone’s true beachhead within the landscape of Indian media was her participation on the reality show “Bigg Boss” in 2011.
During her stay in the “Bigg Boss” house, Sunny was courted by Bollywood filmmaker Mahesh Bhatt for the lead role in “Jism 2,” reported the Hindustan Times. She accepted and the film was released in August 2012 to weak critical reception but commercial success, grossing almost $5.7 million.
Leone has since acted in several Bollywood features, including “Ragini MMS 2,” “Shootout at Wadala,” and “Current Theega.” Most recently, she appeared in Devang Dholakia’s “Kuch Kuch Locha Hai” opposite Ram Kapoor, Evelyn Sharma and Navdeep Chabbra. The romantic comedy was released last week, on May 8.
According to Filmibeat, an Indian media outlet, Leone is next slated to appear opposite Tanuj Virwani in “One Night Stand,” a film directed by Virwani.
