India’s external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj has assured action on reports that three men from Kerala were brutally beaten by their employer in Saudi Arabia.
The three young men are from Haripad in Kerala’s Alappuzha district.
A video allegedly recorded by one of the men shows a Saudi employer beating them with a wooden plank. It has been circulating on social media.
“We reported this to Saudi Police. We are in touch with Indian workers. They will be back in India within a week,” Swaraj tweeted on Thursday.
“We have approached the police and got them police protection. We will follow this up,” her tweet said.
The trio’s families have approached Indian authorities to secure their return.
Kerala chief minister Oommen Chandy also said that the state government have got in touch with the Indian embassy and the Malayali associations in Saudi Arabia, regarding the issue.
On October, the hand of an Indian domestic help had been chopped off by her employer in Saudi Arabia. A video of an Indian worker being beaten by his Saudi employer also went viral in September, sparking widespread outrage on social media.
India had taken immediate action in both the incidents and the government condemned it strongly.
