After the shocking rape and murder of a 29-year-old law student in Kerala, two other incidents of gang rape have been reported, in Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.
While the nation is still in shock by the rape and brutal murder of the student in Kerala, another crime has been reported from Varkala in Kerala. According to a report in The Times of India, a 19-year-old nursing student was allegedly raped by her lover and his friends on an auto rickshaw on Tuesday.
The girl was found in an auto rickshaw in a serious condition in Varkala. Some neighbors who found her, took her to Thiruvananthapuram Medical College.
According to the police, the girl had gone with her lover Shyju to adjacent district Kollam in his auto rickshaw. While returning, two of his friends joined them, and they allegedly raped her on board.
Shyju managed to escape when the neighbors found the girl in the vehicle. The police have started an investigation to catch the accused.
The doctors treating the girl said that she is in a serious condition.
In another incident in Noida, a minor girl was allegedly gang-raped in a park on Tuesday.
A report in The Hindustan Times said that the girl had run away from her house in Shamli in Uttar Pradesh. An auto rickshaw and his two friends raped her after taking her to a park in Sector 119 on Tuesday night.
The police arrested the accused on Wednesday after the girl approached the police and filed a complaint against them.
“The accused — Azad, Amir, and Zahid — all autorickshaw drivers, were arrested from their hideouts…They were produced in the court and were sent to a 14-day judicial custody,” Kiran Sivakumar, senior superintendent of police (SSP), Gautam Budh Nagar, was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.
The incidents raise serious concerns over the security of women in India, especially in the National Capital Region. In 2012, a girl was brutally gang raped and murdered on a moving bus in Delhi.
Though the incident attracted worldwide attention and the nation witnessed unprecedented protests, the country doesn’t seem to have made any serious improvement in terms of security for women.
Following the 2012 Delhi gang rape, the central government had formed an initiative called ‘Nirbhaya Fund’ to enhance security for women. But activists are alleging that the government hasn’t done anything to ensure the safety of women.
