A new census report released on Thursday has estimated that the number of white babies has been outnumbered by racial or ethnic minority babies in the US for the first time.
According to the census estimates, until July 2015, there were 1,995,102 minority babies compared with 1,982,936 non-Hispanic white infant babies younger than 1-year-old.
The new report indicates that the crossover happened some time back in 2013, but pinpointing the exact date will be difficult.
According to Pew Research, the change in the US demography from a white majority country to a minority or ethnic majority country is the result of the long-running immigration and birth trends.
According to 2012 figures, in 2011 white babies were in the minority, but those figures were revised in 2013 to show that the white infants were still the majority. But the new numbers show that the 2011 figures were factually correct.
Going by the current trend, the whites will become a minority in the US population within the decade of 2044 to 2055, but it is difficult to pinpoint the exact year. This is because the fertility rate is altered due to many reasons such as immigration flow and health of the economy.
According to the census statistics released on Thursday, the demographic change is starting to happen among youngest in the nation and the bureau estimates that 50.3% children younger than 5 years were racial or ethnic minorities in 2015.
According to Pew Research Center projections, the total U.S. population, non-Hispanic whites will cease to be the majority group by 2055.
