Nick Johnson, a Brooklyn tech worker, has announced that he collected every Pokémon in the popular mobile game Pokémon Go available in North America and Marriot Rewards has offered Johnson an international trip to catch rare, region-specific Pokémon.
Johnson made his announcement through his Reddit handle as ftb_hodor with a screenshot of his Pokedex but many people take it as unbelievable.
The game, that uses GPS and augmented reality, was developed by Niantic Labs and invites players to catch the colourful Pokémon monsters best known from Nintendo games and trading cards of the 1990s.
North American users can find 142 virtual monsters and the remains of the original 151, Ditto, Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres, Mewtwo, Mew, Mr. mime, Farfetch’d and Kangaskhan are reportedly only available in specific regions in the wild in Europe, Australia and Asia.
“I feel great” Johnson said, “I was getting a lot of rest and exercise and meeting new people. I’m a lot healthier- I think I lost about 8-10 pounds.”
Johnson shared screenshot data from his iPhone Health app with USA Today that shows he walked an average of eight miles per day since Pokémon Go’s US release on July 6.
As a head of platform with start-up Applico and a recently published author, Johnson doesn’t have a lot time to play during the day. So he would start walking around Manhattan and Brooklyn in search of Pokémon right after leaving work around 6 to 6.30. His girlfriend also supported his obsession.
“I probably wouldn’t be here, having caught them all, if I hadn’t got these tips like the Dratinis in Jersey City” Johnson said.
Johnson also revealed that ‘a Porygon’ – his hardest find- in Jersey City by the water. “It popped up on my radar, so I ordered an Uber and had the guy drive me around until I found it,” he laughed.
