Ami Bera, the Indian American Congress representative (D-Elk Grove) said that Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton is the only candidate who understands the complexity of the world.
“As the only South Asian member of Congress, as a member of the Foreign Affairs Committee, I support Hillary Clinton because she is the only candidate that understands the complexity of the world and is prepared from day one to lead America,” Ami Bera said.
Bera expressed his views in a brief appearance at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia. He was one of the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Members of Congress invited to speak at the event led by Congresswoman Judy Chu.
Bera, a physician by training, is for re-election this year and he will go up against Republican Sheriff Scott Jones, to retain his seat in Congress
Asian American Congresswoman Grace Meng said that Hillary would build history for America and build a bright future. “It is critical that we elect a person who will make history for America and build a brighter future for generations to come. And that person is Hillary Clinton!” Meng said.
Meng praised Indian-American businessman from Schaumburg, Raja Krishnamoorthi, who is a Democratic Congressional candidate from Illinois, in her speech.
This is for the first time a group of elected Asian-Americans and Pacific Islanders (AAPI) were invited to speak at a national convention.
Yesterday, Indian American Neera Tanden, the president of the Washington-based progressive public policy research and advocacy organization Center for American Progress, had addressed the Democratic convention.
“I know firsthand that the decisions our leaders make, make all of the difference in peoples’ lives. That’s why I chose a career in public policy, and that’s why I am so very proud to support Hillary Clinton,” Tanden said.
