National Crime Records Bureau releases new data.
Though the number of crimes against women has declined over a period of one year from 2014 to 2015, according to newly released National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) data, many places in India still seem to be unsafe for women.
According to the NCRB data released on Tuesday, 3,27,394 crimes against women were reported in 2015. While 34,471 women were raped in India last year, 7,646 women were victims of dowry deaths. 82,800 women were assaulted, and 24,124 were sexually harassed. A total of 1,13,548 women filed complaints against their husband or relatives.
The Indian Express has come up with a list of cities that have the highest crime rate against women, after analyzing the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau.
The study took into account two parameters, rape cases against women and assault on women with intent to outrage her modesty. The crime rate was calculated using women population in each city.
The following are the six Indian cities that recorded highest crime rate against women.
- Jodhpur (Rajasthan)
The city in Rajasthan recorded highest rate of crime against women to become the most dangerous city for women. A total of 152 rape cases and 440 cases of assault against women were recorded in the city in 2015. The rate of crime in the two parameters is 13.4 and 38.7, respectively.
- Delhi
Though the national capital area is one of the highly secured cities in India, it remains to be one of the most unsafe cities for women in India. The rate of crime in two parameters is 11.60 and 28, respectively. Delhi saw a total of 1,893 rape cases and 4,563 assault cases last year.
3. Gwalior
The city in Madhya Pradesh has been on the list since 2014. Gwalior recorded 188 cases of assault against women with a crime rate of 10.4. The crime rate of assault on women is 17.1.
4. Bhopal
The city in Madhya Pradesh recorded 133 rape cases and 322 cases of assault outraging the modesty of women. Bhopal has the crime rate of 7.1 and 17.1 respectively.
5. Nagpur
With a crime rate of 6.60, and 15.70, Nagpur holds the fifth position. The city in western Maharashtra recorded 166 rape cases and 392 assault cases against women in the year of 2015. Surprisingly, the crime record of the city is worse than bigger cities like Mumbai and Kolkata.
6. Durg-Bhilainagar
The agglomeration combining the two cities of Durg and Bhilai has a population of 10 lakh. But the crime rate in two categories is 7.9 and 16.4 respectively. The city is in the state of Chhattisgarh.
