Chillar, his parents harassed her for dowry, says Lalita in audio recording.
India’s popular pro-kabaddi player Rohit Chillar has been arrested in connection with the death of his wife Lalita, who was found hanging on Friday after she alleged dowry harassment against him and his family.
Lalita was found hanging by her father in the apartment where she was living alone. The police found an audio recording by her, in which said dowry harassment by her husband her in-laws was forcing her to take her life.
In the audio, she says, “I’m not strong enough to survive this, I have decided to quit.” In the 2 hour-long audio, Lalita alleges she was tortured by her husband and family.
Denying the allegations, Rohit Chillar put out a video stating that he has not harmed anyone in his life and least of all his wife.
“I can’t imagine she is gone…I couldn’t even see her for the last time,” he said in the recording posted on Facebook. “I played for the country, never harmed anybody.”
Chillar, who plays for the Bengaluru Bulls in the pro-kabaddi league, was later arrested by police on charges of harassment and abetment to suicide. His father Vijay Singh had surrendered earlier.
Chillar can be seen saying in the video, “I am sure my wife did not say anything like this. My father-in-law knows too that I never asked for dowry.”
A weeping Chillar also says: “I am alive only to prove my innocence. I never did anything wrong…When I get justice, I will go to (my wife).”
Lalita and Rohit got married this March and for her it was a second marriage. The 26-year old kabaddi player got a career break when he was selected to play for the pro-kabaddi league in 2014. He is currently serving the Indian Navy.
