Surat-based industrialist Savji Dholakia has once again surprised his employees by announcing an unexpected bonus for best performers. According to a report in The Economic Times, Dholakia has announced 400 flats and 1,260 cars as Diwali bonuses to his employees.
A renowned diamond manufacturer, Dholakia has spent Rs 51 crores on rewarding his employees this year. His company Hare Krishna Exports is celebrating its golden jubilee this year.
Like every year, Hare Krishna Exports convened an informal meeting of its employees on Tuesday to declare the bonus for 1716 employees. Last year also the company made headlines by gifting 491 cars and 200 flats to its employees. The year before that, he spent Rupees 50 crores on bonus.
“We don’t treat diamond polishers as employees but as family members as they hail from the same area from where we belong. We have given them a gift as per their performance in the company,” Dholakia had told Indian Express in an earlier interview.
Unlike other millionaires, Dholakia once sent his son Dravya to work in Kerala with three sets of clothing and Rs 7,000 emergency money. Hailing from a farming family in Dudhala, Amreli, Gujarat, Dholakia is known as Mr. Savji Kaka in the diamond circles.
Dholakia dropped out of school at 13 and started working at his uncle’s diamond business in Surat. His company currently exports finished diamonds to more than 50 countries directly from Mumbai. The company also has affiliates in the US, Belgium, UAE, Hong Kong and China.
