The New York baron’s presidency begins with a combative 19-minute “America first” speech.
New York mogul Donald J. Trump, who won the highest electoral office in the country in November in an election that upended the conventional political wisdom, was sworn in as the 45th President of the United States.
He was administered the oath of office by the Supreme Court Chief Justice John G. Roberts, Jr., at 12.01 pm on Friday, to preserve and protect the constitution of the United States.
Trump began the the presidency with a combative 19-minute speech, not very different from his typical stump speech that energized the white working class male voters around the country. “We are transferring power from Washington, DC, and giving it back to the people — you,” he said at the outset. “This moment belongs to you.”
He added: “The forgotten men and women will not be forgotten any more.”
Here are some of the highlights of Trump’s first speech as president:
“We will follow two simple rules: buy American and hire Americans.”
“We will eradicate radical Islamic terrorism.”
“We must think big and dream even bigger.”
A few minutes earlier, Mike Pence was sworn in as the Vice President of the United States.
