CIA made sure that Boses’ ideologies never resonate again in Asian countries.
The Central Intelligence Agency had kept a close watch on Subhas Chandra Bose and his international relationship, mainly with the Axis powers says the declassified documents released by the CIA.
According to the report, CIA had kept an eagle eye on India all through the last century. The declassified pages also reveal that an agreement existed between the Axis powers, that included the Nazi Germany and Japan so that the latter will play a major role in India and Subhas Chandra Bose will represent their interest in the subcontinent.
“The Nazis are well aware that Indian people have no national patriotism, but they hope, just the same, that Chandra Bose will be able to embarrass the British,” says a report documented by the CIA.
The declassified documents consisting of close to 12 million pages has detailed data about the CIA interest in India as the US extensively took interest in studying its internal politics for determining a favorable foreign policy.
What made America more interested in India during the World War II was its lenience towards communist ideologies and the influence of German intelligence during the period.
The report also has information about the relationship forged between Bose and Japanese authorities in June 1943, Bose calls Japan as India’s best friend. It also refers to the successful penetration of German Intelligence Agency in India with the assistance of Bose.
Post-independence, America was too concerned about the impression left behind by Bose and this continued till the cold war with the USSR, trying to make sure that Bose’s ideologies never resonate again any Asian countries.
A 24-page report titled “Psychological background survey of India” gives a detailed review of the political scene in independent India and lists the probable factors that could lean in favor of communism. “An analysis of forces at present working within and from without to influence of determining India’s domestic developments and foreign relations will be set forth below to estimate the degree to which India is capable of resisting Communist subversion,” says the report.
The CIA reports also claim that the fringe elements present in the Indian society post-independence were mostly leftovers from the nationalist movements carried out during the British rule.
CIA report also says that the major leftovers were from the movements organized by Bose himself and his followers who were mostly students who engaged in demonstrations, illegal strikes, and boycotts.
In addition to Bose, the Communist Party of India also posed threat to America. The declassified report has noted it as a bigger threat. “The strongest and most dangerous subversive organization in the country today” and a serious problem confronting the newly formed government.
