He will take on incumbent Thomas Patton, who’s a majority whip in the state house.
Indian American Aziz Ahmad ran unopposed in the Ohio House of Representatives District 7 Democratic primary held on Tuesday. In the November 6 general election, he will face Republican incumbent Thomas Patton.
Ahmad has been running a campaign largely focused on three issues: education reform, “common sense gun policy” and healthcare.
“As your representative, I want to help us innovate solutions to the issues we are facing in our communities every day,” he says on his campaign website. “There is so much talent and potential in this district. I have seen and heard inspiring people all over the area talking and offering practical solutions that never see the light of day, because they don’t reach the proper faculties. It’s time for a change, which starts with engagement in politics on all levels (local, state and federal).”
A teacher by profession, he says that the current educational system is broken and needs immediate action to improve. Better education the basis to solving our state and national issues, he says.
Ahmad says that Barack Obama and Bernie Sanders are his role models, and he really appreciates the efforts of Obama in addressing the healthcare issue. The candidate says he also admires the progressive mindset of Sanders, which questions current system and creates ideas that can improve it.
Ahmad was born and raised in District 7 and graduated from Strongsville High School in 2013. He is also an alumnus of the Baldwin Wallace University in Berea.
A resident of Strongsville, he is a Teach for America Corps Member. He is also pursuing a master’s degree in public administration and policy from American University.
Patton, Ahmad’s opponent, is a political heavy weight in the state house, where he is a majority whip.
He also served in the state senate from 2008 to 2017. Prior to that, from 2002 to 2008, he was a state representative.

Aziz is a great guy and his platform is important to the future of America, independent of his ethnicity. I have worked with Aziz in a diverse environment and he treats people with respect, compassion, and attention regardless of their heritage, political views, economic backgrounds, or religious beliefs. That said, if you must identify his ancestry please correct it. Aziz is Palestinian-American.
