The Badhai Ho actor is in California for the world premiere of her film The Last Color, directed by celebrity Indian American chef Vikas Khanna
Indian actor Neena Gupta, who is riding high on the success of last years’ Bollywood sleeper hit, Badhai Ho, is now giving us new fashion goals at the red carpets in California.
The actor is in the United States to attend the 30th edition of Palm Springs International Film Festival, where her new film, The Last Color was screened.
The film, directed by Vikas Khanna, the Michelin star awardee Indian American chef, is a sensitive story of Noor (played by Gupta), a widow, who yearns to play Holi. The film was screened at the Regal Cinemas on January 4 and at Mary Pickford on January 5.

While Gupta made many headlines late last year, when she lifted a popular best actress award in India, a category long seen as “reserved” for “younger” actresses, here in California, seems like Gupta is in a mood to bust a few fashion conventions, too.
Gupta, who brought back the saris to the red carpet, has been wowing fans with her sartorial choice of the resplendent Indian wear.
At the premiere of her film, which according to both the actor and the director, received a houseful of appreciative audiences, Gupta wore a striking black sari with a striped red blouse, from her daughter and designer Masaba Gupta’s label.

On a previous occasion at the festival, Gupta was a vision in sunshine yellow sari. Her red sari with another striped blouse combo, an outfit in which she landed in California in a private aircraft along with Khanna, was a sight to behold.

Both Khanna and Gupta are rooting for their film, which is based on a novel written by Khanna with the same name. The film’s trailer was released last year at the Cannes Film Festival.
The film is extremely close to Khanna’s heart. He was upset to find out, on a trip to Varanasi, that a now-banned tradition had prevented some widows from touching color. Before he worked on the film, he visited various ashrams in Varanasi to dig deeper into the culture which was eventually abolished by the Supreme Court of India.
Both the director and the actor have been actively updating about the screening on social media.
Khanna, an accomplished chef, made his directorial debut with the film.
The Palm Springs Film Festival, which commenced on January 4, will run through January 14. Regarded as one of the largest film festivals in North America, its 2019 edition has thus far seen stars such as Emily Blunt, Emma Stone, Mahershala Ali, Bradley Cooper and several others on the red carpet.
Amongst the Hollywood high wattage glamor, it’s good to see an Indian American veteran actress bringing the spotlight on style through the very Indian sari!
