UNITED NATIONS: Ambassador Asoke Kumar Mukerji, Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations, presented his credentials to the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon here, today.
Mukerji, India’s 20th Permanent Representative at the United Nations in New York, succeeded Ambassador Hardeep Singh Puri, who retired from office end of February.
The vastly experienced Mukerji, who joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1978, reiterated India’s strong commitment to the United Nations and support in helping achieve the five ‘generational’ opportunities, which the Secretary General had set out at the commencement of his second term.
Prior to his appointment in New York, Mukerji served as Special Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, New Delhi. He was in-charge of Political, Policy Planning and Review Matters and Coordinator for Counter-Terrorism and Cyber issues.
Mukerji has served as Acting/Deputy High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom (January 2007 – July 2010), Ambassador of India to Kazakhstan (February 2005 – January 2007), Deputy Chief of Mission of India to the Russian Federation (December 2001 – February 2005), India’s Consul General in Dubai (October 1998 – November 2001), Charge d’affaires of India in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and Turkmenistan (1992), and India’s Consul General in Soviet Central Asia (June 1990 – March 1992).
Mukerji was Chairman of the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Steering Committee for the First South Asian Forum (2011), and Chairman of WTO Committee on Specific Commitments under GATS (1997). He has been a member of Indian delegations to 40th and 41st UNGA Sessions, First SAARC Summit, 8th Non-Aligned Summit, 8th Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting, Six Nation Disarmament Summit, UNESCO General Conference and UNIDO High Level Meeting on Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, as well as in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization and Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia.
