BANGALORE: Apple has released the latest iteration of its operating system, the iOS 8. If you are planning to upgrade your old Apple device, keep in mind that the process is not going to be easy and this time it is also going to eat up a lot more space.
The older versions of iOS used less than 1 GB of internal storage but the new iOS 8 is a real monster when it comes to using space of your internal storage. According to iPhone and iPad users who updated their device, iOS 8 used more than 5 GB of their device’s internal storage. So, before pressing the update button, make sure that you have more than 6 GB of internal storage free in your iPhones and iPads.
The space used by the new iOS 8 varies according to devices. The Verge reported that older versions of iPad used more than 7 GB space and 8 GB and 16 GB versions of iPhone 5C at times even failed to install iOS 8 due to lack of storage and other unidentified issues.
The time taken for updating it has also increased dramatically. On a superfast Wi-Fi connection the iOS 8 will take minimum 3 hours to finish the download process. After the download the device will take more time to complete the installation. The total time to update iOS 8 also depends on the device that you are using. For devices with less processing power like the iPad 3 and iPhone 4s, it might take longer than 6 hours.
As of now Apple has not announced any easy fixes for these issues. Users will have to use iTunes client to update their device without causing storage lose. Even while updating using iTunes, the device need to have free space, but not an enormous 5 GB space used during over-the-air update.
Apple might have foreseen this impending storage issue, which is unavoidable if you need more features. Apple had stopped making 8 GB devices since sometime. The last iPhone to release with 8 GB storage was iPhone 5c.
So, if you own an Apple device released before iPad 3 and iPhone 5C, better give up your desire to update it because with the release of iOS 8, Apple has indirectly said “it’s time to change your device.”
