NEW YORK: The Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif action thriller ‘Bang Bang’ continues to break records: it’s now the top box office Bollywood hit in America, with legs to it.
“Bang Bang,” a Fox Star remake of the Tom Cruise-helmed “Knight and Day,” has garnered so far a total gross of $2.56 million making it the top Hindi movie of the year in North America.
Bang Bang, in its third week at the box office passed earlier Bollywood hit “Kick,” starring Salman Khan. It has now reached $2.56 million million in North America, and is still playing in 100 screens across the continent. Kick, by comparison, finished its run in North America this past summer making $2.47 million.
However, worldwide gross puts “Bang Bang” at $52 million and that makes it No. 2 to “Kick’s” $61 million.
Fox Star Studios chief Vijay Singh told the Financial Express, “There is no other release till ‘Happy New Year’ and so the winning streak should continue. The film has got a great scale to it and outstanding action. We released it outside of India in over 850 theaters, which is the biggest release for any Bollywood film. This includes mainstream theaters where Hollywood films are released. Especially in the Middle East, a lot of local Arabs have gone to see the film, which is why there is very strong performance. We have opened up new markets where Bollywood has not gone before. For example, we have released the film in Lebanon, Iraq and Burma where Bollywood films were not officially released.”
“Happy New Year,” starring Shah Rukh Khan, will open October 23.
