WASHINGTON, DC: The Shah Rukh Khan helmed and produced ‘Happy New Year’ directed by Farah Khan, continues to rake in big money at the box office as it cleared the Rs. 100 crores mark in the shortest ever span of days in Bollywood history, accumulating a whopping Rs. 108.86 crore ($17.9 million) over its opening Diwali weekend in India.
The film, produced by Khan’s in-house production house Red Chillies Entertainment, collected Rs. 104.10 crore in Hindi, while the Telugu and Tamil dubbed versions earned another Rs. 2.92 crore and Rs. 1.84 crore, respectively.
The crime action thriller revolves around a gang that enters a global dance competition to steal diamonds in the vicinity, and is set in India and Dubai. It also stars actress Deepika Padukone and actors Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood and Boman Irani in lead roles.
It remains to be seen how much money Happy New Year goes on to make, if it can sustain the good run for a while. Some reports say the film is not creating an impact overseas.
In the meantime, the Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif starrer Bang Bang continued its superlative run, especially overseas.
So far, the film has collected $13.1 million (Rs. 80.64 crores) overseas, with total box office numbers now well past the Rs. 300 crores mark.
Bang Bang is making quite a splash in the US, where it has collected $2.6 million so far. In the UK, it has garnered $1.96 million, and $5.3 million in the Middle East. In Pakistan too, the film has made $816,000, with a good chance of it crossing the million mark soon. In In Australia, it has collected $430,000.
The film has so far collected the highest overseas collections in the year so far. The all-time leader in overseas collection is Dhoom 3 with $28 million, followed by 3 Idiots with $26 million, and My Name is Khan with $23 million. Chennai Express with $19.3 million, and Jab Tak Hai Jaan with $13,560,000 round off the top five. Bang Bang is at number six on that list, but has a good chance to get past Jab Tak Hai Jaan to break into the top five.
For Happy New Year to break into the top 10 list of all-time Bollywood overseas leaders, it has to surpass the record of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani at $10.5 million (10th spot), which may be a tall order.
Overseas audiences, especially in the US, are selective about watching Bollywood films in theaters, and after watching the high octane action of Bang Bang, might likely pass over another crime caper like Happy New Year coming so soon.

Shahrukh Khan did not helm Happy New Year, Farah Khan did. Check your facts. Also, commas are your friend – use them.
